About me

I am a herpetologist interested in the systematics, bio-geography, ecology, and conservation of amphibians and reptiles. I am especially interested in the patterns and processes of speciation. I mainly use morphological and biogeographical data and other tools to establish boundaries within species-complexes. My research has shown that many geographically widespread ‘species’ actually contain divergent lineages.

As a taxonomist, I devote considerable time to preparing species descriptions and taxonomic revisions, usually initiated by findings in the field whilst collecting and also during my visits to various museums looking at specimens. I have been carrying out such work in South and Southeast Asia since 2005, with a main focus on the countries of Sri Lanka, India, Andaman / Nicobar, and Indonesia specifically (excluding fauna of mainland Papua).

As an editor and reviewer, I spend considerable time in reviewing manuscripts for other journals. I am the editor-in-chief of TAPROBANICA the Journal of Asian Biodiversity (ISSN: 1800-427X) which is now regarded as a leading journal for biodiversity and conservation in the tropical Asian region. I am a reviewer of Contributions to Zoology, Journal of Integrative Zoology, and Zootaxa.

As a conservationist, I have a strong commitment to furthering the IUCN’s vision and mission. I am an expert member of the National Red Listing Committee for the Ministry of Environment, Government of Sri Lanka, and a commission member of the following IUCN committees: CEM South East Asia including the Climate Change Adaptation Thematic Group, the Red List of Ecosystems Thematic Group and the IUCN Species Survival Commission (Amphibian Specialist Group and Crocodile Specialist Group).

I am currently a Research Scientist at the Research Center for Climate Change, University of Indonesia (RCCC-UI), Depok, Indonesia.
